Sworn translation of a passport
For citizens of the Russian Federation
- First option (internal passport of the Russian Federation)
First, we translate the Russian Federation’s internal passport into a foreign language (the main page and all pages with stamps, or all pages), and then we have the translation notarized.
Exactly which pages to translate depends entirely on the recipient’s requirements. Always clarify these requirements; that way you’ll save time, money, and stress.
Additionally, it’s important to find out at the place where the document is submitted whether they will accept a notarized translation from Russia. Official bodies in many countries only accept documents with translations carried out within their territory (by sworn or court-appointed translators, for example).
- Second option (foreign passport of a citizen of the Russian Federation)
The passport holder must appear in person at a notary public’s office to obtain a notarized copy or an extract of their passport.
As for the foreign passport, you can have a notarized copy or a notarized certification made. Sometimes notaries don’t want to make a copy, so the only option is to make one yourself.
A certified copy is a notarized copy of only the passport’s main page (containing the document holder’s photograph). A notarized copy is a copy of all the pages of the passport.
After this, the notarized copy must be apostilled by the Ministry of Justice of the Russian Federation. The notarized copy is translated into a foreign language, and the translation is notarized.
Another option is to translate the notarized copy into a foreign language, have the notarized translation certified, and affix the Ministry of Justice’s “Apostille” stamp at the end of the notarized and certified translation.
For foreign citizens
- First option
Translation of the passport’s main page (the page with the document holder’s photograph) into Russian. In this case, the translation is attached to the scanned copy of this page and notarized. This option is suitable for everyday situations: when going to a bank, a notary’s office, for medical services, insurance, etc.
- Second option
Translation of all passport pages without exception. Primarily, this option is used when interacting with the migration authorities of the Russian Federation, when applying for a temporary residence permit, a residence permit, or Russian citizenship.
- Third option
There is another option in which, to provide certain services, the foreign national must have a notarized copy of their passport (copy of the main page) and have that copy apostilled.
This option is necessary to obtain duplicate certificates or civil registry documents, to request criminal record certificates, and applies only to foreigners who have left the territory of the Russian Federation. In this case, the notarized copy is translated into Russian, and the translation is notarized.
