A notarized power of attorney is required in virtually all cases to perform certain actions on behalf of clients or to obtain specific documents. When a person is in Russia, they can simply go to the nearest notary office and draft a document with the required powers. However, for Russians living in Italy, there are two primary options for granting a power of attorney.

Option 1: Drafting Through an Italian Notary

This method involves drafting the document through an Italian notary, obtaining an apostille from the Public Prosecutor's Office of Italy, and subsequent written translation into Russian with notarization in Russia.

  • Procedure: To book an appointment, you will need a draft power of attorney. This draft allows the notary to confirm their ability to execute the document and set the fee.
  • Costs: Unlike in Russia, Italian notary fees are not strictly regulated. Based on our experience, fees can range from €250 to as high as €1,500 for the same document.
  • Timeline: This option is relatively fast. The notary process and apostille can often be completed within a few business days, depending on the specific prosecutor’s office.
  • Logistics: After certification, the document must be sent to Russia. Currently, this cannot be done directly and must be arranged through a third country, which may take three weeks or more.

Option 2: Drafting at a Russian Consulate

Another option is to visit a Russian consulate in Italy. When booking through the consulate’s official site, you must attach a draft power of attorney; without it, an appointment cannot be made.

  • Timeline: Processing times at consulates are significantly longer, often taking 2–3 months.
  • Costs: The consular fee is quite modest, approximately €50.
  • Digital Integration: Consulates are connected to a unified system with Russian notaries. At your request, a consular official can generate a digital version and email it directly to a Russian notary. The recipient in Russia can then obtain a paper copy from their local notary, certifying the electronic document's equivalence.

Using a Russian Visa Centre

You may also contact a Russian Visa Centre in Italy to facilitate the process. They offer standard (3–5 business days) or urgent (same-day) modes and often have more flexible appointment scheduling options for the Consulate. You can check these options here: https://visa-it.com/ru/appointment/.
