Notarial authentication of a copy of a document
In what cases is a notarized copy of the original required:
- when it is a requirement of the receiving party;
- when you need to keep the original document for yourself;
- for the full consular legalization procedure;
- when the "Apostille" stamp is required on the notarized copy;
- when the “Apostille” stamp is required on the notarially certified translation of the document;
- when a double apostille is required.
The last requirement applies to the Netherlands and Belgium. According to these countries’ regulations, the apostille must be affixed to the original document and to its notarized copy, with the notarized translation attached.
To make a notarized copy, you need:
- that the integrity of the document has not been compromised. - that it cannot be torn and has no holes or scuffs;
- that the text of the document, including official seals and stamps, is legible;
- that the document is not laminated;
- that the document does not have any strange annotations.
Important!
In Russia, you cannot obtain a notarized copy of an original foreign document; you can only obtain a notarized translation.
Only the passport holder is entitled to have a notarized copy made of their internal and foreign passports of the Russian Federation.
