Obtaining Russian citizenship on a general basis
Category of citizens: adult foreign citizens, legally competent or stateless persons permanently residing in the Russian Federation with a residence permit for at least 5 years. Such persons may apply for citizenship for themselves, their children, or persons recognized as incompetent and under their guardianship.
In this case, applicants must:
- Take a test on your knowledge of the Russian language, history, and fundamentals of Russian legislation. You can try your hand at this online test: rf-test.ru.
- Currently, all commercial testing centers in Moscow and the Moscow region are closed, and this exam is only taken at the migration centers themselves (in Sakharovo, Odintsovo, and Podolsk).
- On the official website of the State Budgetary Institution "Migration Center" (Sakharovo), information about testing details has been posted.
The exam lasts 4 hours and 30 minutes and costs 5,900 rubles. You must bring your national passport, residence permit, a notarized translation of your passport, and a payment receipt (the service is paid at the immigration center).
The exam does not need to be taken by persons over 70 years of age, incapacitated persons, or persons with Group I disabilities.
Obtaining Russian citizenship on exceptional grounds
Category of citizens—those who have a qualification or possess a profession thatis of interest to the state, as well as foreigners who have exceptional merits in various areas of the social, cultural, and economic life of the country.
Obtaining Russian citizenship through a simplified procedure
Category of citizens:
- those who have entered into a contract with the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation for a period of at least one year;
- those who have received refugee status or temporary asylum;
- born in the RSFSR during the existence of the USSR;
- having a parent (including an adoptive parent) who is a citizen of the Russian Federation with permanent residence in the Russian Federation;
- having a child, including an adult , who is a citizen of the Russian Federation with permanent residence in the Russian Federation;
- married to a citizen of the Russian Federation and having children together;
- graduated with honors from one of the higher educational institutions of the Russian Federation;
- having higher professional education, as well as those who have completed postgraduate studies and worked at least one year on the territory of the Russian Federation.
