Temporary residence permit
Obtaining a temporary residence permit (TRP) is the first step for a foreign citizen towards Russian citizenship.
A temporary residence permit (TRP) is a stamp in a foreigner's national passport that grants them the right to live and work in the Russian Federation for three years without the need for additional permits (entry visas, work permits, or patents). The next step after obtaining this permit is to apply for a permanent residence permit.
Applications for temporary residence permits are submitted within a quota established annually by the Russian Government based on applications from constituent entities of the Russian Federation. Once the quota is exhausted, such applications can only be submitted the following year.
However, there are categories of individuals who can obtain a permit outside the quota: their list is established in the Federal Law "On the Legal Status of Foreign Citizens in the Russian Federation." These primarily include spouses, parents, and children of Russian citizens, as well as individuals born in the RSFSR and former USSR citizens.
A temporary residence permit application must be accompanied by a package of documents, the list of which depends on the basis for which the permit is being issued (marriage certificate, birth certificate, etc.). Most often, the applicant will also be required to pass an exam on the Russian language, Russian history, and the fundamentals of Russian legislation.
When submitting documents, you will have to undergo fingerprint registration, and the registration procedure itself will take approximately 4-5 months.
