Consecutive interpretation
What is consecutive interpreting?
It is a form of two-way communication between two parties, where precision and accuracy in conveying information are important.
The communication scheme is simple: the speaker expresses themselves in short sentences, and the interpreter interprets and conveys the meaning of what is said in the listeners’ language. It is very important that the translator correctly interpret what they hear, adhere to the meaning and logic, copy the speaker’s tone, and maintain the communication pace set by the speaker. In a sense, the translator becomes the speaker’s “shadow.” It’s ideal when listeners barely notice the difference between the speaker and the interpreter.
Maintaining the pace helps control the timing, allows all participants to tune into the overall tone of the meeting, helps them follow the thread of what’s being said and notice nuances, and gives them time to reflect on their response and formulate questions.
In what format is consecutive interpretation used?
- In negotiations.
- Consultations.
- Presentations.
- Interview.
- Equipment setup.
- In informational meetings.
- Conferences.
As we can see, consecutive interpreting is used in a wide variety of settings.
The fact that someone knows a foreign language and has specialized university training by no means implies that they can translate any subject—from nuclear fission to the cultural peculiarities of Eastern peoples to drilling in permafrost conditions.
For consecutive interpreting, interpreters (translators) are called upon—experienced specialists in the subject matter who are familiar with the nuances and master the glossary of a given topic.
Even if these conditions are met, it is important that the interpreter receive all materials about the event before the bilateral meeting and have sufficient time to prepare.
The minimum preparation time, taking into account the translator’s required skills and experience in the subject matter, is one day before the event; ideally, it should be several business days.
